I admit I did becuase seemed like all the other kids were always off doing their thing so I was pretty much left alone so I would imagine I had a friend playing with me. My little sister also did this, she is now 5 and since she started school she no longer has a imaginary friend. Do you think kids only make them up because they are lonely or is there other reasons? Did you have a imaginary friend growing up or knew someone that did. Do you think parents or guardians should do something about them?

Yes I did have an imaginary friend while I was growing up. I based him off of Harvey. For those who don't know Harvey is a 6 foot invisible rabbit in a play and movie of the same name. He just seemed perfect to use as a child. Once I got into school he went away. I think that's fairly normal with kids. My parents just sort of ignored it all. They knew of it, were polite about it but didn't make a big deal about it all.

Cute, Thanks for the response to my discussion I appreciate it. I haven't seen or heard of a movie called Harvey but I am sure it was a good one. I think most imaginary friends go away when children start school because then they make friends and do not have to make them up anymore.

I think that a bunny would be a great imaginary friend cause a rabbit to a child is a safe thing. It also represents the easter bunny to them in some ways. So having a big cuddly rabbit as a friend couldn't be bad.

Oh my God emeraldisle, I got this picture in my minds eye that's just killing me... I all of a sudden could picture this little girl skipping through the house followed by her imaginary 6 foot tall invisible rabbit...and a trail of rather large rabbit droppings trailing behind...hehehe How funny would that be..good thing he was imaginary..lol

I had an imaginary friend but, now that I'm an adult it seems very strange to me. My imaginary friend was named Isabella. She was an older woman in a wheelchair. She had long black hair with grey mixed in. Usually she wore her hair pulled back or up in a braid. I remember her teaching me to read and do math. I also remember her helping me get my bike up around the bottom corner of the stairs, by lifting the back tire for me. I was only 8 and had to keep my bike in the cellar. That's also wehre we all played. When we moved I remember saying goodbye to her. I guess the first time I really thought about it was in high school. I took a child care course for two years. I know many children that have had imaginary friends. When we talked about it in class and I told my story everyone just stared at me. The teacher thought it was very strange, she suggested that maybe Isabella wasn't imaginary at all. She thought it was possible that Isabella was a ghost or spirit. So ever since then I'm not really sure what I think about it. I used to tell my parents all the time about Isabella the lady that lived in our cellar in a wheelchair. They always said "good, why don't you go down and play with her for a while" I had 3 other younger brothers and sisters and my mother had just had the youngest. So while I refer to her as my imaginary friend, I'm still not conviced she was imaginary..lol I think alot of kids make them up. I believe in ghosts too. I know that children are more sensetive to ghosts so maybe sometimes they are seeing ghost and not imagining them. I don't think parents should necessarally do anything about them. But I would question them on it and investigate a bit if it were me.

Oh, you made me sad! Im just thinking about this poor little girl who is left alone while all the other kids are off playing & there she is all by herself. I never had an imaginary friend. I was never lonely though. My mom had 6 sisters & a brother. I have 87 cousins in all. & thats just on my moms side. There was about 12 of us that was really close in age. Plus everyone came to my grandmas almost every single day. We all got on and off the bus there when we went to school. So there was never a time that I was alone. Of course most of them (all but 2 & me) was boys. That was fine by me though. We use to play in the creek, fish, climb trees, explore the woods everything that kids should do. Aww, the good ol days. One of my cousins (She's about 10 yrs younger then me) did have an imaginary friend when she was little. She was an only child and never really got to play with other kids. Maybe they do make them up because they are lonely. I dont think that parents should do anything about it. There just being kids. It's good for them to use there imagination. Once they get older, they wont use it as much so let em do it while they can.

I never talked much about her unless I was mad and then I would announce .."I'm going down cellar with Isabella" and storm off. When I had mentioned her to my mother she just blew me off and one time said there was no isabella, so I told Isabella my mother didn't believe me and Isabella told me grown ups really can't see her.??? So I just didn't bring her up to adults...lol But none of my friends could see her either...hmmm Maybe I was just plain nuts...hehehe

Shame on anyone who thiks your nuts! I think you are a very intelligent person. Maybe you have a little sylvia browne in your personality and that is why you could see her and they couldn't. Ghost or imaginary doesn't really matter she was a friend who helped through some lonely times in your life probably. It also probably helped put charactor in the type of person you are today. So maybe you were blessed.
