Are you an Encourager or a Discourager?

What comes out your mouth on a daily basis? Are you embarrassed by what you say or do throughout the day? Do you have any idea how you are treating people you care about? What about strangers? Anyone can be kind to someone that they love, but who can be kind to someone that they do not know, or someone that they would prefer not to be around? Have you ever thought about why an unpleasant person is so unpleasant? Rough times in life does not give a person a right to be angry and mean at all, and believe me, I am not giving an excuse for people that act like this, but, how should we treat them? Should we ignore them? Let their venom return to them full force? No, we should not. We should love them, care for them and encourage them. Not in a patronizing way, but slowly, the same way that a person would help an injured animal. You can't just jump in and try to bandage every hurt. You must build a relationship, slowly, deliberatly with genuine care and concern. If you have something nice to say, and you mean it, say it. Sometimes it just means listening to the person. Other times it is to bring them something, a card, a flower, or even a note that says they are appreciated. How much would the world change if each of us set out each day with a purpose to make just one person smile that day? What if we all stopped thinking about ourselves and thought about the people around us. Look at each person as an individual with true concern and care.

Definitely an encourager, unless I think it's a bad idea that should be discouraged. I find that criticism, if too negative, is counterproductive, anyway. If you start with objectivity, the negative approach doesn't work.

There is always a way to show someone that they can do something differently without being negative, unless of course it is a 2 year old and they are about to burn themself on an oven, than a great big negative no is probably a good idea.
