Why is it that some people truly think "it can't happen to them"?

Example: Working with a young teenager who just was diagnosed with HIV, and she truly thought and believed it could not happen to her, I find it very dificult accepting her excuse. I feel she is still in denial because her behavior has not changed.

Anything can happen to anybody. I got pregnant, the first and only time I slept with someone....after that, I take all precautions for everything. I used to think that...yea, it'll never happen to me...I've been proven wrong in more ways than one. She will eventually get it...just give her some time to let it soak in.
