I've always wanted to drive Route 66 from Illinois to California. I did get to drive a good part of it in Illinois and a couple of miles in Missouri. Has anyone made the trip? Tell me about it. Or if you haven't,do you want to? Why?

Yes, I have made the drive on Route 66 from the Midwest and have been at the end of Route 66 at the pier in Santa Monica, CA. For the past 17 years I have lived 8 blocks from the Old Route 66 as it runs through my town in Kingman,Az. In fact, I drive on this historic route every time I go to the market or doing my various errands. From Kingman it runs south and up into the mountain to (and through)an old mining town called Oatman. The town is a favorite tourist stop along this famous route....and the town is known for their wild Burros that roam the streets. Tourist get a kick out of buying feed that is available to feed the Burros. Every year in this area they have an event called The Route 66 Run, it draws a large number of car clubs that come to drive the historic route in their collectible cars...it draws a lot of people and some terrific cars to view.

That's neat that you were able to make that drive. So much of the old road is gone. I guess I have always wanted to step back in time, to a slower pace. Maybe that's part of the appeal of Route 66. I have to ask.Being as you live so close and drive it often, does RT 66 seem such a big deal to you?

That is a good question. There are times that I drive it and I am only thinking of the things I need to do...and then there are times that I have a "Reality Moment" and say to myself, "There are people who travel from all over the world to drive this historic route that I am taking for granted." And then I say, "Take time to observe this important road". So I do!

It's easy to take things for granted sometimes. It's good that you step back and remind yourself to appreciate it. My husband was born and raised not far from Niagra Falls. He says it's just a bunch of water falling over the edge. He just kind of took it for granted and forgot about appreciating it. It wasn't a big deal to him. Some day, I might just make it the rest of the way down that road.I just hope it still there for me to see.
