New job...how do you negotiate salary?

When you go for an interview and the potential employer asks you to name your salary request, how do you know how much to ask such that you can get as much money as you want WITHOUT asking for too much where you price yourself out of the job? It's a tough balancing act! If the offer does come back lower than you wanted, how do you negotiate for more money? Or should you take the lower offer, even if it means taking a pay cut?

In my country it's not possible for the most of workers, negotiate salary, as they' re negotiated by the unions for all the workers of the same industry or sector.

How does that work? The union determines how much people get paid based on years of experience? What happens if one person works really hard but the other slacks off and makes mistakes. Do both people make the same amount of money if they started at the same time? It seems like that would cause a lot of problems!

Actually its all depends on the work experience and how much he has earned earlier... and if a person earning 3 lakhs per annum he should ask atleast 4 to 5 lakhs per annum for the new job, if he has the capability for that new job he can ask more than that too...
