What is the purpose of dreaming?

We often have countless dreams at night. Some have significance but most have none. What do you think is the purpose of dreaming in our life? I think they are just fruits of our imagination away from our waking life. They work wonders beyond our control but don't necessarily have a certain purpose in our life.
