There are two ways in which a women can have twins. One is where two eggs are released and they are both fertilised, this will produce non identical twins. The other is where one egg splits in half and develops into two seperate babies, this is when you have identical twins. Another more modern cause of twins is IVF treatment where they plant several eggs to maximise the chances of at least one surviving, sometimes they get lucky and more than egg survives.

Believe it or not 2 eggs can be fertilized by two different men to produce twins. Sounds crazy but it just happened in my area not to long ago. I was in the hospital giving birth to my twins and the nurses were talking about it.
