What does it mean when a Japanese geisha privately gives a man a rice cake?

was watching the movie Memoirs of a Geisha and I didn't understand what it meant when she was giving men a rice cake and then that lady was telling her something whoever is the higgest bidder, so can someone just explain this to me. Thanks!
