Good governance is the latest mantra of the governments throughout the world, particularly in developing countries like India. Public accountability is one of the very important aspects of good governance which is exercised by an alert and public welfare oriented media. Accountability leads to efficiency in administration. By projecting various lacunae in the functioning of the administration media sees to it that they are removed. Red tapism, political leanings, delay in decision making and other ills associated with bureaucracy could be checked by the media.
Corruption, which is endemic to all forms of government, can be controlled to a great extent by the media. Though corruption assumes various shades, political administrative corruption is most acute and they require an immediate solution. Politician - bureaucrat nexus is assuming a monstrous shape. Politicians and bureaucrats, instead of being the pillars on whom a safe and sound democracy could be laid, are playing the opposite role. The need of the hour is to immediately stop this trouble from becoming calami tous otherwise the consequences could be much more severe from what is being witnessed at present. One cannot question about the part media has to and has been playing to curb this menace. umerous scams and scandals involving top echelons of the government and administration have been exposed throughout the world. Had the media not been up to its task people would not have known the darker side of their representatives and the nation would have been continuously milked by these socalled "guardians of democracy" for their self interests.
