What is a tag used for?

I don't understand for the tags. What are they used for. Do they have a use? Help me.

Hi They are two fold......... 1. It helps mylot users to find your topic!! 2. If you put a couple of tags in your discussions you will see your earnings increase!

they allow people to search for your post... the tags will help the search engine know where your posts belongs, and allows people to know what your post is about...
