My daughter was born 8 weeks premature and because I developed gestational diabetes and had to take insulin shots, her little lungs didn't develop some hormone that makes them not stick together so she was flown out to Cook's Childrens Hospital in Ft Worth, Tx (wonderful place, by the way) within hours of her birth and put on a respirator and feeding tube. I didn't even get to hold her until 7 days old. She was only in the NICU for 10 days and then we got to come home. I thought she was so little, but she was 5 lbs and when I got to go to the NICU, I saw all those itty bitty 1 and 2 lb babies! SO SAD! Anyhow, my daughter is almost 3 now and besides a speech delay and her being really small, you can't tell there was anything wrong with her. Anyone else have similar stories? I would love to hear from you!

I have a preemie! She was over 4 weeks early. I had to be induced all of a sudden one day after an ultrasound that had determined she had stopped growing.. my placenta was no longer functioning. She was 4 lbs 6 oz! Her lungs were mature, though, thankfully. The only "issues" she had was keeping her body temperature up.. and feeding problems (she was having problems sucking and swallowing). She was in NICU for just 5 days, left there at 4 lbs 7 oz!
She's a bit over 10 months old now :*) She's pretty small for her age (was 15 lbs 5 oz at her 9 month appt, we have a weight check this week) but she's very healthy and thriving! She just started crawling this week :*)

ahhh. how sweet. i am glad she is doing good. my daughter is almost 3 and weighs in at 25 lbs. she is really small, but the doc doesn't seem to be bothered. she is just small, her pedi says. LOL my daughter was born at 5 lbs 2 oz and left the NICU at a little under 5 lbs...can't remember the exact weight.
AHHH...the crawling! LOL fun fun fun!

My twins were born nearly 8 weeks early, due to premature labor. I required complete bed rest and had 2 other children at the time. We moved in with my mother who watched over the girls while I rested as much as possible. After the second onset of labor, I was taken to the hospital in the next state. They specialize in caring for premature babies. After a week of being on meds to stop the labor, I was released to go home. Two days later I was back at our local hospital. I was put on a Ritadrine drip to stop the labor.
Three weeks later I delivered the twin boys. The first had no problems, but the second had Respiratory Distress Syndrome. They flew him by helicopter to the hospital in the next state. The doctors told me that he was the healthiest baby in the neonatal care unit. Although he only weighed 4 1/2 lb, the other babies were tinier and more at risk.
Both babies suffered from developmental delays and were on IEP's for most of their school days.
