Something For Everyone! No, Really!

So many ideas floating through my head this morning! I awoke with head stuffed full of thoughts and fingers itching to express them. There will be many discussions from me today. This is the first. And as I click the 'start discussion' button, I know the wondering will start. What small issue regarding Mylot has crawled into Misskat's bonnet today? Because, after all, all I do is complain. ;)
I jest! No, I want to preface this post by pointing out that I am not, indeed, complaining. I am not angry, upset, annoyed, irritated or a vast many other words that express displeasure. I am amused! Yes, amused.
Now, on to the topic of discussion!
One of the Mylot 'Dos' and oft repeated tips is to start your conversation under an interest. Which makes perfect sense to me, of course. I see interests as the Mylot equivalent of sub-forums, those shining beacons for like minded people to come together in discussion and debate! (And cat fights and temper tantrums, but let us focus on the positive.)
Here on Mylot you can find discussions by people who are interested in reading, writing, watching television. Or perhaps something moer specific. If you're a fan of the Harry Potter franch...er, books, there's a whole list of discussions to tickle you! Or if you find yourself longing to discuss french poodles, there's a place for you as well. And even if your hobbies include 'sitting alone n thinking abt ppl' and 'freaking out in the parties' or perhaps you're a fan of 'weirdness'. Yes, you can find like minded people here.
Now you see where I'm going.
Before you leap for my tender throat, know I only chose random hobbies interests that had at least five people listed for them. Yes, there is no limit to what people will list under their interests. Multiple people even! And in browsing these interests that sometimes catch my eye, I find... discussions that have nothing to do with the interest. Though that's hardly limited to only random and eye-catching interests.
Perhaps a better oft-repeated suggestion would read 'list your discussions in an appropriate interests category'.
I know. As always, I ask too much.

I really do hope you get up every morning from the same side you woke up from :) because we need some good sensible topics to be started and discussed here.
I totally agree with you that one should ALWAYS catagorize their interests and start a discussion regarding it, not just for the heck of it. It really irritates me to see the stupidist topics being started just so that people can earn more... I mean, come on people! Start something which will either benefit you, others or even both.
Misskat, you go girl. I feel kind of relaxed seeing good topics, yours included :) And people, please try to listen to what other say and mean. And please do try to follow and adopt it, it's for your and mylot's good. Cheers

My bed's against the wall, so don't worry about that! ;) I never change. I still don't know if that's good or bad.
If I have a topic that doesn't fit an interest, I just post it in general. No sense in sticking it where it doesn't belong. Thank you, very much! I do what I can.

Can I just add a little something? I find it endlessy irritating that anytime I respond to a discussion that is not categorized into my areas of interest, the site asks me if I want to add the interest. No, I'm sorry, that 189th version of mylot, mylot.com, mylots etc. is no something I wish to add at this time. You see, I already have 3 different versions of this website listed under my interests, and I feel that is quite sufficient.

You make some good points and I do try and do that. Sometimes I just ignore some discussions as I have nothing to contribute, Other times I do not comment after reading the discussion because I have nothing to say concerning it. So I like your thoughts here. Looking forward to other things you put out today.

I know for myself there are some times when I might have an idea for a discussion but it doesn't always fit in with any of my interests. It doesn't pidgeon hole well or it's something that yes I'm interested right then but not something I'm interested in hearing about all the time.
I do agree where possible to put it under an interest but sometimes that can be easier said then done. Finding the right interest area can make a difference. For example if I do one on house insurance, do I put it under houses, insurance, Florida (since that is the state I'm in) and I could list more but you get the general idea. So figuring out where to place something can be tricky a ttimes.

That's very true. But any one of those would be reasonable. As opposed to, what's the most recent example... Ah! A question about writing poetry in the recipe section, or a post about appraising art in the human sexuality category.

I think you have made a good suggestion to list ones discussions in appropriate interests category. i think mylot froum has just added this feature of adding interests so as to make it easier to categorise discussions and help us figure what we want o rely to saving time and energy.
But i like to reply to any random discussion that seems sensible, interesting and to which i feel ic an contribute. and when the mylot asks if i want to add that interest then if i really like it as my interest i hit yes and if i don't like it to be my interest i hit no thanks. And till now i don't use it thatmuch since i reply mostly top or friends or new discussions.

first off, as usual, brilliantly written :)
i can't much add to what you've already said, more than back it up.
though i can say this:
i once tried adding a discussion in a specific topic group. i don't mean your list of personal interests, but the list in the title bar below the discussions (discussing i've started, discussions i've responded to' etc)....
i have so far not been able to ADD in my own discussion, and always have to resort to creating a new "general" topic if it's something not in my interest categories.
what have i done wrong? i know other people are successfully doing what i so desperatelt try to do...then again, maybe this is the key to answer your query: maybe there are more people like me who cannot figure out how to list their thoughts under the right discussion topics :)

As everyone knows, it is true that we must categorize our interests and respond on them..
But this discussion is stating the obvious.. nothing new or interesting in this

No you don't and no matter how much you think that you jest i for one always find myself coming back to your discussions. Maybe are a jester but you always have good reasons to jest and they are worth reading and responding too. I know i ain't the best at the writing part sometimes but i always pay very close attention while reading all discussions that i do comment on!!

Well misskat I'll play in your ballpark anytime!
I always try to catagorise my posts but sometimes I go astray and think "Damn, why did I put that in there"!
But I'm getting better.
I like your posts and read them whenever I can and I wish I could start interesting ones like you.....

I agree it is good to start a discussion in a specific interest topic. But I have started several discussions and each time the discussion does not show in that topic (it shows in no topic). See my question about this at http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/651628.aspx

Being rather new to this and wondering if I was the only one who could not always find the appropriate interest for my topic I am now relieved that I am not alone. There have been times when I could not seem to find the interest to fit the topic so have used general discussion for this. Thanks Misskat for making me feel better today!
