Blenders and Liquidizers - HELP !!

Any cooks out there?
Is it just me?! I never have much luck with these contraptions.
I just made a creamy vegetable soup and put it in our (new) blender to purée. Well, the top blew off (even though I was holding it down)and our kitchen looked like 10 projective vomiters had had a party in there. I cleaned the hot soup off of every surface (even surfaces I didn´t know I had) and repeated it with only a quarter full of soup. It bl***y blew off again and spattered my recently cleaned kitchen! What is it with me and liquidizers? Can you not blend hot foods? Can you not blend food with cream in? To make matters worse, when I was trying to unscrew the top part to rinse it out, the glass came out of the base and gave me an electric shock!!
Maybe I should stick to soup "with bits in" in the future! I have the same trouble with our hand blender, I end up spattering the room!!
