Why Are Diabetics the Worst Critics and Judges Over Other Diabetics?

This is one subject that I am beginning to really despise. Is Diabetics who are quick to judge and condemn another Diabetic when they might not always know the underlying factors in why a Diabetic is the way that they are. And why judge someone unless you are doing everything you can to make sure you are feeling your Best day to day. The issue here at hand that I am trying to get Across is: The judgement that goes on from one of the co-workers I work with. Her and I just never tend to agree on anything, and she always feels like she knows everything, and I feel unless she has walked in my shoes, and lived life like I have, she has no reason to judge me. The issue at hand was discussing Doctors and Diabetes care. And with me saying unless a person is seeing an Endocronologist, a lot of the Doctors are very inexperienced about Diabetes, and that is why there are a lot of people around that have Diabetes complications that are sometimes quite severe when they are found out they are Diabetic. But at the same time, even when they know they are Diabetic, a lot of Doctors and nurses are unskilled, and know nothing, or never stop to think of the real issue at hand. I was trying to state to her, that I was suffering from Severe Chronic wounds due to being Diabetic, and going to a Wound Clinic, who never seemed to think that the reasons my wounds never healed was due to me not wanting to take care of myself. But at the same time my BG was running 350-375 a lot of the time after I ate, and did they seem to think that was the problem? No, they nor the Doctor I was seeing at the time, thought nothing of it. And the worst thing was, I had NO INSURANCE so I was wasting over $10,000 with no one caring about the real issue. What it took for me, was getting back on SS Disability for a time, getting a really Bad staph infection due to the Chronic wounds, etc. and ending up in the hospital for like 10 days, and then being put on Insulin right away, and on Antibiotics for 3 months, and then seeing the Wound Clinic again for these to heal. I know it was also thru the Grace of god thru all of this, I never lost my leg either. Since being put on Insulin, life is a lot better for me. I am No longer on Disability, and have a Full time job again which I enjoy, and Yes, I have my Good days and my Bad days with my Sugar levels, but I know that I feel unless a person has walked in someone elses shoes, why take the time to judge and be critical of someone? I feel we need to watch what we say, or it could come back around, and what I endured I would not want to really wish on anyone.

I just came across your discussion whilst making a comment on the answer you posted to the one I started. I´m not diabetic myself but I fully agree with you on the fact that a lot of people believe it´s their right to judge others, while only you know what your going through and the efforts you make to get treated in a professional way by medical staff. Only to often they treat their patients like ignorant children who don´t know what they are doing. It´s a shame that you had to go through so much suffering because of their lack of knowledge. I´m really glad that you are much better now. All the best and have a nice evening. Dana

It seems there are always "know it alls" in all aspects of life. I am a type 2 diabetic, and I'm not sure that I am being treated with the utmost skilled professionals, as well. Currently I am taking 2500mg of gloucaphage, 8mg of avandia, and 20mg of glipizide daily. Often I find my BG in the 80's, and sometimes even lower. To combat the low BG counts, I have begun eating some sweets along and drinking regular sodas. I'm quite sure I'm being overmedicated. I was seeing anendocrinologist for quite some time who had me on lower dosages, but she moved away and I'm now seeing a regular MD. As far as others judging you or me, the Bible says not to judge, but seem people just feel the need to try to force their thoughts upon us when they really don't have a clue.

Well, I have definately learned over time that it is up to us as an Individual on what type of Health choices we make, and who we see as a Dr. etc. and no one else can run or control our lives unless it is in the best interest for us.

I don't have diabetes, although I there are some concerns with my son. The situation with critics and judges is true not only with diabetes though, but also with other conditions as well.

For sure, For sure. That is why people need to always remember to be careful with what they say, and remember, if you have never walked in someone else's shoes how can you say you know what will work best for them.

There will always be some people who think they have the right to judge others or tell them what and how they should do certain things. Although I am not a diabetic myself, I do have other medical conditions. When people do find out, they then proceed to tell me what I should do and this is regardless of whether or not they have any medical training. So now if I am asked, I will just say something like "oh a few things are falling apart but that is just my age" and refuse to divulge any more information. With regard to seeing medical people, I will travel a long distance to see someone who knows and understands my medical condition. I have come to trust these people and know I can rely on them to do their best for me. I think that is the main thing really, having someone you can trust to make sure that everything is alright with your health and the medications etc that you take. Congratulations on standing up for what you believe in and I do hope that now you are on insulin you are enjoying a much better quality of life. :)

Thanks for your comments, and Yes, I am enjoying a better quality of life, and even in my Bad days I survive. I know many like you now afraid to divulge what is going on in their life, and this could be the Best approach sometimes with others. It is a shame though when people are this judgemental and never stop to think if they could be harming you in any way or not.
