We we're talking at work today about our sleeping habits especially on weekends when we're not working. One of my co-worker said that she doenst get up till 12noon on weekends. Then this guy(asst.supervisor)told us that if you oversleep too much you are a depressed person. Is this true?Do you agree with this?

I sleep until noon on a regular basis, and I'm certainly not depressed. I just stay up rather late and sleep in during the day. While persistent exhaustion can be a sign of depression, just sleeping in a lot isn't really a warning sign. It's when a person just can't seem to get out of bed and wants to sleep most of the time.

I would definitely have to agree with the person who stays in bed most of the time and just can not seem to get out or want to get out of bed. A depressed person has a tendency to just want to hibernate in their bed or home and avoid people and the outside world.

I agree with you two.If the person just want to stay in bed and dont want to do anything then i think he/she is depressed.I mean if you have reasons to stay in bed because you're tired i guess depression has nothing to do with it.Thanks for replying to my discussion.

Who doenst like to sleep,i know i do.If you oversleep occasionally i dont see a problem with that. But if you do it on purpose because you dont wanna go out and meet people now thats a problem.Thank you for responding to my discussion.

on weekends i get up at 12 noon, my boyfriend forces me to eat lunch half-asleep, then i go back to bed again and wake up probably four or five. i don't think i'm depressed because i'm perfectly happy with wehre i am. i'm just plain tires and maybe that's tru for others too. those who oversleep even if they don't do anything exhausting are the ones who might be having a serious problem.

I like to stay in bed especially on weekends.Thats the only time that i can get enough sleep.I have to wake up at 4:30 am everyday for work.So i think i dont fall on the depressed category for oversleeping. Thanks for replying to my discussion.

Well,i didnt really agree to him when he said that.i guess it depends on the person itself. It could be true to some people but to some its not.I sleep atleast till 10am on Weekends and im not depressed.I had to catch up some sleep since i have woke up at 4:30am from Mon-Fri.Thank you for responding to my discussion.

I think it depends on how often that they oversleep. If it is just occasionally then I do not think they are depressed and are just tired after long days at work or school or both. If it is everyday then I would tend to agree. Some depressed people get very little sleep as well so it depends I think on the frequency that these things happen.

I don't agree with him. Didn't he even thought about your work and the stress that you get while working? I think he's the one who's depressed and only want to blame and mislead it to others. I also suffer stress while working, and it's really hard if you work almost half a day just to finish all the jobs that are to prioritized and have deadline. It really is hard to wake up on the next morning, but we have to adjust on this for us not to lose our jobs!;)

Our work is really stressful, atleast for me.I have to wake up 4:30am everyday. And i wasn't used to it since when i was still at school i had afternoon classes. And then this co-worker i was talking about has 2 kids so that must be stressful too.But i dont think this guy is drepressed though since he's a playful person. Its really hard to adjust,im all sleepy at work.Btw,thanks for replying.

Yes, I agree what the guy said.
I have this kind of experience that I got eversleep on weekend, I know it is bad habit, but I cannot get up because I like sleep in the warm bed.
If you oversleep, you will feel bad and headache, sometimes you do faint. it is harmul for body health.
So, people should get up early in weekend, don't get oversleep, get up in the morning, you can breath the fresh air, and do some excise. it make people body good.

When you were a Teenager you probably slept in as well. They all seem to. If you dont get enough sleep during the week your body will cath up eventually as well so that is not a single sign of depression....

I do agree that depression can make you oversleeping but not the other way around .
I think if you tend to oversleep you are kind of lazy to get up :P or you are so exhausted and you need more sleeping :P
But anyway i think depression have to do nothing with sleep ;)
Maybe he is just depressed and he oversleep :P (combooo :) )

I don't think that is necessarily true. Just because someone is a go-getter, bright-eyed morning person doesn't mean they are depressed. I think that if you are depressed you are probably more likely to just want to stay in bed and sleep more than usual, but I doubt all late risers are down in the dumps. There are any number of reasons why you might not feel like getting up or have a hard time waking up when you have no morning obligations. Perhaps you are sleep deprived during the week and your body tries to help you catch up when you don't HAVE to get up early. Or you could have a hormone problem such as a thyroid issue or some other health problem like chronic fatigue sydrome. Perhaps the person eats too much sugar as this has a big influence on energy levels. Also, any number of these health problems can contribute to low mood and depression, so there could be an underlying health issue creating a depressed mood and thereby making this person not feel like waking up very well.
I personally am not a morning person and like to sleep as late as I can when possible. I think it's a matter of personality and preference. A morning person shouldn't judge someone who isn't.
