How much money have you spent on entering in writing contest?

I don't know about you but being a writer takes a lot of work, time and too much energy to waste.
I am contemplating on wether or not to enter in a contest in fear of the 17.00 entry fee per item.
Anyone feel that they are throwing their money away these days?
Any advice, please help?

It really depends on the sort of writing contest, the prizes and most importantly, who is running it. If it is run by some fly by night organization, or one I haven't heard of - I'd be wary. If it's a long-established organization with great prizes (like putting your manuscript in front of an editor or agent) then I'd definitely go for it.
Be wary of poetry competitions where they tell you that you've won and your poem will be published and that for a fee you can buy the book with your poem in there. This is a scam and EVERYONE who enters wins - that is everyone gets their poem published and can buy the book with their poem in there.
