How would you network for your business?

A member of another site posed this question to me a few days ago. I'm new to the whole "owning a business" thing, and this question has proved a challenging one for me! The whole point of a business is for others to know what you offer, and partake of your services, right? But HOW do you get the word out in the first place? I have tried several methods, so free, some more expensive than I would have liked. 2 months later, my website and business have not had nearly as much exposure as I'd like. So I pose the question to you! How would you network for your own business? What things can you come up with to gain exposure?
