Last Shred of Dignity

This is something I notice quite frequently in movies and TV, and I'd like your thoughts on it....
In the event that you are in extreme danger or threat by another person, say, being tied up and tortured and about to be killed, why is it our instinct or urge to yell, swear, badmouth, threat, or trash-talk our assailant? Is it a last shred of dignity or something else? Do we really think it will make a difference and set us free?

I think we all have a fight or flight response to danger. How we're made. Given we don't want to die we do whatever we can to save/ protect or notify someone else to help is why we yell etc

I think that we've lost all control, and we submit to our panic.
