At my house, my husband and I will clean up after our family meals. I wish my kids would lend a hand. Now that we have a dishwasher it is easier, but they usually don't even offer. This infuriates me. Yes, I am their mother, but they are now adults.
When we are invited to dinner I always lend a hand. I am usually the first up from the table and begin clearing it and getting the dishes into the sink.

I am going to let them know in advance this year that they will be responsible and can draw numbers if need be.

Well just keep it up and hopefully they will learn from watching their Mom... or you could always in a joking manner mention that fact to them :)

If we have a get together at our home, my huby always help me with all the work. First he will help me at kitchen while cooking. And after all done and guests left we both do the cleaning. If one is cleaning in kitchen one will be doing the living room cleaning. Living room also get very much to cleaning as we don't have separate dining room. If there is kid they sometime mess up bad.

The younger female age 11 and up in our family usually do the fixing after family get together, although of course 2 or 3 of them help each other, mostly the younger girls like below 10 won't be there because they play a lot.

The adults do it, or they make the really younger ones do it while they sit and watch. They don't lift a finger until someone talks about leftovers and then people jump up and chim in to try and get the leftovers first.

It is a collective effort in our home, we will bring all the necessary dinner items in the dining table and we happily dine and after finishing everyone will cooperate. One will move the vessels to the cleaning place other will keep the extra foods in fridge and the other will clear. It is usually my mom or wife who cleans ( in our country only ladies do the cleaning work). Since everyone share the responsibility work becomes easier

I clean up after family get togethers. I do alot of the cooking also. My sister comes and disappears as soon as she is done eating. That makes me mad, as there is 5 in her family and she doesn't offer to bring anything either. I do not think it is my Mother's place. She needs to enjoy herself. She has done it for years.

whenever we all get together there's no question who is going to clean up cook or help out we all do whatever the other person is not doing. we all get in to the kitchen and some of us peel vegetables and cut them, others wash ishes and some cook there's no division of work. we all are so busy chatting up that we hardly notice anything and work gets done quickly and then we all sit and sing songs or just pull each others legs. Those who don't work take up the art of entertaining us all by songs otr general chit chat. though kitchen is small but all of us do not want to be left out or leave ne person alone to amnage everyuthing. wht could be a dreary work turns in to a total fun activity.

Usually if it's at our house I do. Our kitchen isn't very big and having more then one person in there is a bit rough so they do their thing and I clean. If it's at my mothers or brothers place then I usually help them with it. Usually others help in too over at those places.

If the family gathering is in my home, then my husband (reluctantly) and myself usually do the cleaning. If the gathering is in one of my sons or my daughter's houses, then they always insist that I rest while they do the cleaning. I love going to their houses as I hate doing the tidying up afterwards.

Our family get togethers are at my parents house. Since I don't do the cooking (can't cook), I will help my mom out by clearing the table and basically cleaning up. I do this so my mom doesn't have to deal with this, after we leave to go home.

I am the one that does it. I am curious, are the oldest daughter? I am from a large family and I am the oldest. I find that usually it is the oldest that begins the clean up. That is why I ask. Once I start, others will begin to help but they never seem to begin.

Funny you should bring up this topic, My sister and I were just discussing this. She is annoyed because everytime she does have a get together at her house, she gets stuck with the mess.Everybody eats and runs. But, I'm not guilty! I just live to far away to help out. My whole family is in NJ while I'm here all alone in FL.
I think everyone should contribute to cleaning up. I have always made it a point to clean up after myself and my children whenever you do go to the inlaws.

I don't make it to very many get togethers anymore. I live 1000 miles from my family. So usually when we are home, we have a get together just because of that reason. My mom does the cleaning. Sometimes she lets my little sister help her. She pretty much tells those of us who don't live there to get out of the way because we don't know where stuff goes. My mom is very neat and organized. I swear, she knows if you move a bowl 1 inch to the left and will call you out on it. :) There is no way she would be able to relax while someone else was messing around in her kitchen!
Everytime she has come up here, though, she has cleaned up after every meal at my house, too. I don't expect her to, but she just does it. Of course, the first time she came up here I was pregnant with my son and morning sickness was terrible. Part of the time she was here I couldn't even walk into the kitchen without getting sick. And the other time she was here was right after my son was born. So she was here to help out. She got here the same day I came home from the hospital and was here for about a week. I just wasn't feeling up to cleaning a lot yet.

Well, the only time our whole family gets together is Christmas. It's usually at my house and I cook and clean up. I prefer to have it that way. We got to my mother and father for New Year's Eve and my mother cooks and we all sort of clean up.

In my family all the women help clean (except my newest sister-in-law). All the women gather in the kitchen and each of us take on a project. One does dishes, one puts away food, one drys and puts away dishes, etc.

i am the one that cleans up after get together. i also help my mom preparing things for the get together. we don't have a maid at the house and we grew up in a family that helps one another in terms of chores, that's why it's a normal things for the family to help each other out when there is special event or happenings that is about to happen at our house.
