I know we shouldn't but we allow our dog to drink from the toilet. It is not like she does it all the time. We fill her water bowl up at night, but sometimes she finishes it and then goes to the bathroom for more water.
do you allow your dog to drink out of the toilet?

I only had to chase my dog away from the toilet a couple of times when we first got him before he got the idea that it was off limits. Most dogs eat their own poop (and that of others animals, as my cat can attest)at least once in awhile, which, though really gross, doesn't usually harm them, so I'm not too worried about drinking from the toilet making him ill. Mostly, I don't allow it because it is off-putting our human sensitivities
We did teach our dog not to lick us, especally on our faces, because of these facts. :-P
BTW. We moved the cat box so he couldn't turd-burgle anymore, too.

Turd-burgle...that's got to be one of the funniest aword combinations I've ever heard in my life. Good job! (Seriously, that's funny!)

I don't have a problem with my dogs drinking out of the toliet. They will do it even if their water dish is full. I think they like it because it is colder. The bathroom is right off from where I sit most of the day so I can constantly yell at anyone who doesn't flush. And we never use those drop in toliet bowl cleaners, and after we do use any kind of cleaner, we flush the toliet many times before opening the lid back up.

Yuck! LOL My puppy is always licking me in the mouth before I can get away!
No, we do not let him drink out of the toilet bowl. We keep the lid down so he cant.

We don't ALLOW them to, they just do if they are out of water in their bowl and the seat is up. This can be bad if you use dissolving bowl cleaners, so watch out!

we don't use the dissolving bowl cleaners.
We give her a small bowl of water in our bathroom at night. She has a larger bowl downstairs. Sometimes if she finishes her small bowl and it too lazy to go downstairs she might go to the toilet. this happens very rarely, just once in a while.

My dog shows absolutely no interest in drinking out of the toilet. My cats however, do. They will not drink out of a water bowl, even if I give them one seperate from the dog. They prefer to drink out of the sink, you need to leave the faucet dripping just a little. In leiu of that, they will drink out of the toilet, or hop in the shower right after it was used, drink a little, and then roll around in it!

Actually, our dog has not shown an interest in doing that. I suppose I could look at this two ways:
First, if the dog doesn't mind, why should I. Apparently doesn't hurt the dog.
Secnondly, do you let the dog lick you? May make you think again.
Whatever works to keep the critters happy. Thanks for sharing.

my dog cannot reach the toilet but i think you should just keep putting the lid down so the dog cant get to the water. its a bad habit. dogs are always thirsty and when i,m showering my dog he drinks the water as it runs down his body.

I will never ever let her drink out of the toilet . And I make it sure that toilet door is closed when I go to bed . But all that is history , she is no more . Anywayz Nice topic ..you brought tears in my eyes . I loved my pet a lot . She was completely spoiled by me , still her brain was quite sharp . she could easily decide which room's A.C is on

Our dogs are outside but they would be allowed to drink from the toilet if they were inside and outside dogs. otherwise it is too risky for them to get worms if they are stricky indoor dogs. If yours are inside all the time, you should always stay upto date on their wormers. Even if they are outside dogs, wormers are very important.

yes its true that sometimes dogs do go for drinking toilet water...even my SHERU sometimes do so...bt instead of insisting him doing so again n again i have put a ball of water in toilet too and whenever my SHERU reaches there he dont go for that dirty toilet water rather drinks a clean water from his own ball ...

Actually, no. I would NEVER let my dog drink out of the toilet. Reason being... the toilet is a waste receptacle. Look at it this way. No matter how much you may clean your toilet, the bottom line is that your toilet is a haven for bacteria. Would you drink out of it?
If you have a dog in your house, your toilet seat should be down or your bathroom door closed. That's simply not good for your dog.

of course i won't!
it's such a horrible thing to do to your pet. if you really love your pet, you won't allow him to drink from anywhere especially from the toilet. try putting some more ater for her. and close the door of your bathroom.

I have 3 good size water bowls - maybe 2 quarts each. My guys don't find it necessary to use the toilet for water.
I would recommend a 2nd bowl in the house to prevent the situation from occuring.

Our cats will drink out of the toilet if we forget to put the seat down. Both of us always try to remember to leave the seat down just for that reason. It can't be good for them.
