Do your dog and cat get along? Are they friends? We got our dog (a puppy) when our cat was 5 years old. At first the cat hated the dog. I have to admit she was pretty hyper. Once she finally calmed down a little, they seem to get along. I don't think they are best friends or anything, but they seem to tolerate each other and even play at times.

Hello Rachel:
Now they do; but it wasn't always the case. I halready had a 14 year old cat and an 8 year old dog who learned to co-exsist. They never got close to one another. every chance the cat has to smack the dog, he takes. LOL Just recently we added another dog to the family. Back in September we got a 2 year old female. She's perfect in every way except she hated cats. It took us all this time to finally trust her enough to roam the house freely. My cat never got close to dogs but last night the most amazing thing happened. They were both laying in bed together and for the first time in my cats life, (as I mentioned before he's 14 years old) he kissed the dog and was washing her ears. Four months it took us to train them to tolerate each other. Perseverence paid off in a big way.

We brought the cat into our house with our Whippet, and the Sheltie we had. It took a few days, but for the most part they all tolerated one another. The Sheltie really didn't bother much with the cat, but the Whippet played with her. We now have a different Sheltie after losing our other one, and they all love to play and chase one another all over. The cat is the worst one to hide behind or under things then jump out and surprise one of the dogs, then take off running and hide someplace else. They are really comical to watch, and even nicer when you see them lay with one another and sleep.

that is great that they play together, and even better that they will lay together. How cute!

then, I guess that's a good thing that you don't have a cat. How do you know your dog wouldn't get along with it?

Growl! -Growl!, did something mention a four letter word - 'Cats', never had any time for them myself, useless creatures, love chasing them though, although I can never catch these little critters, I am sure I saw a discussion called 'StuffMyCat' or something like that - all I can say is that that is a good idea, the only good cat is a stuffed one.
Have a woof woof day.

Yes, my dog is very laid back. We got my black lab when my cats were 4. Then we added another cat. She loved them all. The cats clean her ears and sleep with her. Then we added a bird and an iguana and finally another cat. The dog takes it all in stride. We had to put the original 2 to sleep this past year, they were 17, and we lost another one the year before, so we were down to one cat and one dog. For Christmas we got the kids a kitten and the kitten hisses at the dog and the dog looks so HURT by it!

Our cat gets along with the dogs. He was raised with 2 german shepherds, they were all raised together, so it works. The cat acts more like a dog because of it!

My dog and cat get along great. The dog "babysits" the cat. If you look at the pictures at the top of the Interest section the picture of the two of them is the 3rd one over. The cat is on his back and Sherry is "tasting" him. lol I have no idea why the crazy dog does this or for that matter why the darn cat lets her. But usually where you see one you see the other.
