What is the worst you've ever gotten lost? (For less than five days, perhaps?)

I was recently reading a news story about a man who had recently arrived in New York and got lost while he was out for a walk. He ended up being lost for _five days_, and when he was finally found he ended up in the hospital recovering from dehydration and frostbite. What's the worst that you've ever gotten lost? Feel free to share any stories that you have about getting lost, or to share what you think about this news story. There's a lot more to the actual story, which you can read by following the link below: http://www.davesdaily.com/out.php?id=23835&url=http%3A%2F%2Fnews.yahoo.com%2Fs%2Fap%2F20070122%2Fap_on_fe_st%2Flost_immigrant

West Edmonton Mall - Photo of the ship that is in West Edmonton Mall. the world's largest shopping mall.Located in Alberta Canada
I can't open the link, but I could just imagine this poor man's terror. Since I couldn't read the whole story I assume he was visiting or an immigrant that could not speak english. My own story is that I lost my husband at West Edmonton Mall for 3 hours. He is the real outdoorsy type and never has a fear of getting lost. He was to embarrassed to ask for directions like a typical male. He tried using the mall directory, but to no avail. I finally spotted his cowboy hat in the crowd. He had that real "deer in the headlights" look on his face. I almost fell over laughing. When I asked him why he had not gone back to our hotel room, he admitted that he could not find the mall entrance to the hotel. He hates shopping even more now

Ive never really gotton lost but i did drive into a blizzard years back and it felt like i was lost we couldnt see the road and we were on the highway with steep cliffs on the sides i ended up sticking my head out the window to look down and watch the ground while my girlfriend at the time steered ,mind you there were four small kids in the back seat crying ,well we finally seen a light and manage to pull into the drive of someones house ,now this is the wierd part after we all were inside they had three beds made up in the basement and said we can stay there,we said thank god you had a light on outside and they said we havent had elctricity all day. Talk about getting lost ...God found us.and sent us there, the next morning our car was buried in snow the guy there pulled it into his garage the motor was a frozen block of ice.

Poor Mootoo!!!! That is just so sad. Now he wants to go home and I can't much blame the him. It's awful he felt too scared to ask for help. At first I thought he didn't know English or something. The people that helped him, I sure hope they get some recognition for their parts. We don't see many heroes these days, and those two were everything I think heroes are. Who said, you need a cape anyway. :-)

well... poor guy.. but i think that he is still lucky that he is still alive. anyway the closest thing for me to getting really lost was when me and my friends climbed in mt. talomo here in the philippines. see we werent supposed to climb there because we have agreed that we should just stay and go to the falls at the foot of the mountain and just relax there. but then one of or companions was really intent on going there and there were only 5 of us and we have only one tent. he insisted so much and he complained and talked to us and we couldnt let him down so there we go. it was a long climb.. we started for like 9am in the morning and then we had lunch for like 12 noon. so it was still midday. then when we got nearer and we got a lot more tired and exhausted we rested for a while. the 2 of my companions together with the guide (which makes us 6 in all) went first and my bf and my friend and i stayed to rest for a while. and then it started to get dark and we cannot really go on anymore as we are exhausted and i havent slept yet. so there i was, sent by my friends to fetch the guide. i left my bag and followed the trail signs to the peak. for like 30 minutes i went walking and getting crazier as i cannot see or hear anything in movement. i shouted their names and no one will answer. i was very afraid and i began to panic. i was on the verge of tears but i still continued to search for trail signs and hope that this was the right way as there are many ways. so after like an eternity and when i was almost giving up, i cried my friends name one last time and then there he was. i was so happy and relieved and actually hugged my friend because i have heard that many people got lost in that forest. so i got my friends (the one left behind) rescued and we enjoyed the peak!. it was very magnificent!.

Nice topic to talk about. I know one of my senior co-worker's son got lost for couple of days just in the last year when the office was closed for a vacation. That young boy left his house to meet one of his friends riding on his bi-cycle. But he did not return home on that day. Police authority was informed. And finally he was rescued from a dustbin, he just could not recollect what had happened with him during those two days.

uhm...it sorry to hear that story. I did not know, how the man didnot ask the other people or policemen for help? Is he cannot speak english? Or He is too shy to talk with another people? Too bad. I never gotten lost, because if I were in a strange places, I will ask the policemen where is the place that I must go. And I always studied the map. Don't be a shy to ask the policemen.

about getting lost i have too many experiences. For i am a person with no sensation about direction.Just several days ago,i wanted to go shopping in the supermarket. But i just came this city lately,i wanted to find the market by my rememberation that my friend once showed me around, but i failed.i got lost and finally failed to find the supermaket. However, everytime when i am lost,i would take a taxi to go home.so,i went back and asked for my friend to take me there. When we arrived at the market ,i almost have cried,i admired my sensation about direction once again, since i found i just wandered around the market,if i went ahead only for one pace,i would have reached my aim.

New year is the biggest city in the world. But I dont think it will be so big until the man will be able to get lost for 5 days. Maybe he is just taking a walk around. LOL. Frankly, I did get lost in a city once. In Shanghai, it turns out to be no one knows where's the street I'm supposed to go. I walk around for quite a long time before I met a couple who led me to the correct way. I'm really relieved that I finally found someone who can bring me back to where I came from after a 2 hours "walk". LOL. That's a bad experience which I will never want to experience again.

My son is in the Navy, and last spring he came home from leave and flew into JFK. Now I have lived within an hour of NYC for almost 18 years, but I have never driven down there. But hey, I figured I can get him, I have been all over the country. I got some directions and jumped in the car. About 20 minutes into the drive down, he called to tell me the flight was delayed, I said no problem. I was looking for a road of a particular number, so I just kept driving, all of a sudden, I thought I might have missed the exit. I was in Queens by now. So I took an exit, figuring I would jump back on the other way and everything would be resolved. Nope, no on ramp. I kept driving until I found another highway and felt I was headed in the right direction, by this time I was by Yankee stadium (all right you natives stop laughing). I kept going, the better half (at least at this particular time) called me to see how I was doing. I told him the situation, he was at work with some native New Yorkers and was supposed to call me back with directions. Kept driving, no call came, at last a toll booth. I asked the guy how to get to the JFK, he told me to cross the George Washington Bridge, I said doesn't that go to NJ. He said, yes I said isn't JFK in Queens, he said I don't know. I did not listen to him. By the time I got to JFK, I had been in Harlem, the Bronx, Manhattan and Yonkers. I had been wanting to see the Intrepid again, but not a drive by. The call came as I was leaving Manhattan and saw a sign for the airport way high up and so small that I was surprised I noticed it. I got to the airport and still had to wait for 1 1/2 hours for my son's plane to arrive. Boy he looked good in his uniform! On the way home, we were just driving a few minutes and he says Whoa, Yankee stadium, bet I don't get back for a game this season.

Actually I got lost once trying to find my way home from work one day several months ago. I completely blanked out and forgot where I lived and what direction I was supposed to go in. I am sure people are going to be laughing at me about this one but it is true. It did not take me as long to find my way home as it did the man you were talking about but it took long enough but made it home safely. I had to actually call a friend to tell me where I lived. LOL

well i don't have a story about being lost myself but I can tell you about my cousin. This past July 1, our cousin got married in New York, our other cousin and her boyfriend were coming from Connecticut to New York, when her boyfriend was driving and she fell asleep, he finally woke her up when they reached the Canada border!! They went 4 hours out of the way all because he got on the wrong way on the interstate.

I've never really been lost, disoriented for a few minutes in the woods as a child. But I have a pretty good sense of direction and always take note of different landmarks when I am out and about. But I did hear about this poor man on the news. It's terrible that a person has to be so aftaid that they can't seek help. I can't even begin to imagine how scared this man was. Such an unfortunate happening, at least he will be ok. Thank god someone helped him, it just is so sad. Having always lived in the US, I wouldn't have this problem. If I was in a different country I would seek help no matter what the possible outcome may be. It's not worth dying over because you are afraid of what may happen when you are found.

I have not been lost for more the an hour I don't think, I was once told I have this built in compass years ago. If I had been lost for that long I would of stopped and asked for directions. :) But then again I am a female. I couldn't imagine being lost for 5 days. Even if no able to speak English he could of stopped and officer or went to a hospital for help they would of got an interpreter.

the worst that i have ever gotten lost was probably for about 1-2 hours. it was when i was in the subway and i was going somewhere i had never been. i had directions from my friend who said he knew where it was, it turned out that he didnt. so the only thing i could do was ask people for directions but anyone i asked didnt know. at that point i was so mad i didnt know what i would do but luckily i was able to find a police officer and he finally was able to give me the right directions.
