How do we know that our child/niece/younger bro or sis is watching a good show?

i have a younger brother and a 2 yr old neice who is very fond of watching differnt TV shows and cartoons, and CARTOONS shows more violence according to studies...when i am around i know that i can easily monitor them...but when i am not that's what im afraid of...we usually left them with their yaya, but they dont have the same concern to these youngs as i do...so as an experienced mother or father how do you make sure that your children or siblings are watching a good tv show?
