Online Manga Scanlations

I'm a great fan of japanese manga comics but I can't read their originals because of the japanese characters. Thank heavens for scanlations. Do anybody here know of good scanlation hosting sites? Also it's been bugging me, is the hosting of free online scanlations legal?
