Batman was originally created by Bob Kane and was actually a super hero who mainly used to fight with supernatural and psycotic villains. But much later it was graphic novel authors like Frank Miller who practically re-invented Batman as a kind of flawed "neurotic" super hero.Batman's neurosis stems from the incident of his parent's murder which he witnessed as a child. Therefore the criminals that Batman fights can be thought of as his own personal demons. The very act of fighting against the criminals has nothing to do with his sense of injustice rather it can be thought of as an act of symbolic vengeance. It is through these acts that batman is able to live his fantasy of revenge against the "other",therefore he is able to prevent himself from sinking down into the abyss of psychosis.
