Do you learn better by doing or by reading?

Some people, like me, just can't learn well by reading. Others do better by reading, such as instruction manuals, textbooks, etc. For example, most of what I know about computers is self-taught...I wouldn't know anyting if I had to read those huge volumes that try to teach you everything...Which way do you find you learn better? Please give some examples.

we can learn better by the experience.. and also by learning.. but learning wont help us in all the way.. so the experience.. is much more greater than the learning..

you rightly said experience i mean practical is better than reading or cramming books.

I learn better by doing. Show me how to do something and I can do it. Reading is ok but it won't sink in for me till I actually do the task myself. Hands on experience is always best.

When i used to study for my exams i use to learn better by readinga s one has to read, undestand the topic, get the zest of it and then write it in own words. I don't like to mug up topics. Besides by reading books we gain knowledge and it is good hobby to have. But most other things like using computer and internet i figured out myslef by using it thoughi had done computer couse but there is difference between what's in books and whatit real world. and so one ahs to adapt according to it and get better at it.

I'am also sometimes having a hard time in reading instruction but I just prefer it rather wait for some one to teach me if I want to learn something. I use to learn alot of things I know in computer through researching and reading.

I also learn alot for doing it personally because an experience is better than theoretical.

I find it easier to learn by doing things and figuring things out on my own rather than reading. If someone reads to me I will retain it faster than if I read it for myself. If all else fails then I will read the instructions, LOL. Strange isn't it ...

I think it is better by doing. I think reading is good way to learn, but sometimes just read canot remember tightenly IF you doing sothing, you get the sense of actual, you can kep it in mind for a long time. Learnng need the two way, reading spend less time, and doing can get a deeply sense in mind.

I'm a little bit of both.. I find both ways are how I learn.. Though I know that.. I'm definitely a kinesthetic learner. Meaning that I learn better by doing. I find when someone demonstrates something before hand & then I end up following what they had done that.. I end up learning things a lot faster compared to just reading books or even information about things. I know that when I am learning something new that I prefer to jot down a lot of notes. But I also know that when someone teaches me something or even trains me how to do something that I remember more by learning this particular way! I also do consider myself some-what to be a visual learner as well. I find I learn more when something is demonstrated or illustrated or even if pictures are created. I know that these techniques usually help me to learn rather quickly. I will give you a few examples so that you can understand a little bit more about how I learn. For example in certain situations when I am able to see someone do something.. Or I am able to see whatever I am doing before hand.. And then end up doing it myself afterwards.. That I find I learn a lot more this way.. Sometimes I find that when I am listening to something sometimes that.. I don't completely understand it. So by doing something myself or watching someone do it before hand.. I find it a lot easier to learn compared to having to listen to something. For example sometimes watching someone cook a specific food that I am wanting to make.. I find I learn better by jotting down notes, or by watching the person do it before hand.. Compared to just having to listen to someone or sometimes even read how to do things.. It all depends upon the situation for me though. As well if I am unable to see something, then I find that a large majority of the time I don't get it then.. In other words I have to read things myself to understand things sometimes.. In conclusion.. I guess sometimes though that it does all depend upon what I am learning as well.. I think sometimes in life all of us sometimes learn better by doing both.. But it sometimes may all depend upon what it is exactly that we are doing at that certain point in time. Thanks for allowing me to share! xx

all great examples here...i think, at least for me, visualization (not reading)is very important for my learning process, as well as listening...i could get so much more out of a college lecture than i ever could by reading the chapter...though maybe it's a question of interest there, because I can read through one of my favorite books and remember it all just fine..of course, there's no big "learning" there...it's strange the different ways some people are able to comprehend...thank you for sharing these ideas

I am the kind of person who learns by doing. I will put things together without reading the directions and not stop till I get it right. I cook by adding things till it tastes right then write down I put in the recipe. I know directions are ther for a purpose but I hate them. I enjoy doing things with my hands- that is how I learn and I remember better that way too

you're right..at least with me, i do remember so much better doing it this way..directions and handbooks just confuse me and make it harder for me to learn, and i can be very impatient that way...lol..thank you

It more easy to learn things by doing than by reading through manuals. But reading also helps a lot. There are thing you don't know that can be found in books or manual. I think they go hand in hand.

I learn Macromedia Flash software by reading tutorial online and follow the steps , eventually did one self project using everything i've learn. We should have both reading materials and experience( hands on working on the subject) to master a skill or anything at all.

experience, they say, is always the best teacher. for me this is true. textbooks can teach us all the theories there could possibly be, but it is through practical application of these theories that makes us understand what they are all about in the first place.

I think doing an activity teaches u much better than just reading abt it.This is very much true with computers .Even if u read various books abt computers u cant learn it if u havent used it practically

i'm an engineering student(mechanical).i just can't read every part of an automobile thro' books.so,i went to a mechanic shop and used to watch the happenings there daily.i was able to have a good grasp of the machine parts then.this won't have happened if i read the book simply.
