I am a huge fan of black tomatos and bought plants and seeds online last year. I didn't have great luck with the seed, but did have with the plants. I would like to know of a good type that doesn't crack at the top, I want a good beefy type tomato. Any suggestions? I did get one black cherry plant to grow from seed, but started too late and only got 5 tomatos. When would be a good time to start my seeds this year?

You should start them now if you haven't already. There are many black tomatoes out there. There is a black Russian version of the beefstake but I can't remember the name.
Cherokee purple is more like a Roma but is very easy to grow. It is also a low maintenance plant that will produce plenty.
