In children, those who lie earlier and more are shown to have higher IQs than those who do not.
Why do we lie? Because we think (mistakenly or not) that it is the best chance we have of getting what we want with as little downside as possible.
It all boils down to cost/benefit, risk/reward. Do we HAVE to lie, of course not. But can our lives be much much easier if we don't exclude the lie from our arsenal, you betcha!
Examples:
"Yes honey that dress looks great"
"Yes mother-in-law, I've accepted jesus as my personal savior"
"No boss, the meat wasn't over-cooked"
If you aren't willing to lie occasionally, then I guarantee that you will suffer socially. The key is to recognize that social interactions are often just a big face-saving game anyway whereby you aren't even expected to tell the truth all the time.
There are a lot of hot button issues out there and you never know on which side people stand. Can you go around in life being opinionated and "right" all of the time, or can you sometimes tell the other person what they really want to hear anyway?
We each have to make our own bed. I'd rather sleep in a comfy one.
