There are many threats to our fragile planet and as our knowledge grew the more we know about these potential threats. An asteroid hitting the earth is one example but there are still many threats that is hard to dismis like global warming and ice age, the sun running out of fuel, a black hole eating our solar system, because our solar system are continuosly traveling in the outer space,etc.
