Coverting word files to PDF, help!

Can anyone help me. I'm trying to convert a word document into a PDF file. I do this by printing with a PDF printer, however everytime i do it the PDF file is messed up. It keepds turning all symbols and pictures into a random selection of letters. Does anyone have any ideas how to get round this. Thanks for any help.
