Why does my myLot number sometimes not increase?

Why does the number in parentheses after my myLot username sometimes not increase after starting discussions and posting responses? The response was in a discussion I had already responded in, so is that why no increase? I realize it does not go up when we comment to a comment, but today it has stopped going up eventhough I have also started a new discussion.
