While I don't necessarily buy into astrology, I do find that the general characteristics for the signs are at least in the ballpark. So that all said, what do you guys think, is it true that certain signs just generally go better with certain other signs, i.e. libras (like me) and geminis?

I have been doing astrology now for 10 years. However, I do not buy into the Sign characteristics. They have their place but I don't focus on them when I do readings.
The aspects are what is most important in a chart. Your chart is a mathematical calculation of where the planets were at the time of your birth. Because the planets have their own energetic flavours, when they are combined with other planets what is created is a kind of blueprint. This blueprint of energies makes up your psychological profile.
Now when someone focuses on star signs, and in particular focuses on your Sun sign, this doesn't always ring true. A person may not have a very strong Sun in their chart and so cannot relate to their SunSign. Unless you look at the overall picture then the sunsign type of astrology is very very shallow.
Astrology is a science and respectfully it takes many many years to become a good astrologer. I become quite annoyed at horoscopes that you see in newspapers and magazines, they say nothing and so many people believe them. Especially young people hoping that because they are a Libran, going out with an Aries is good for them - this is rubbish.
So in answer to your question I have to say NO NO NO.

Thanks for that response. I'm right there with you on a lot of stuff being rubbish, to insight from a pro is most appreciated.

As an astrologer, I'd have to say that this is one of the most common questions people ask me... 'who am I compatible with?' The thing that I always tell people is that there is so much more to compatibility than the sun sign. Yes, the sun can be part of it, but I find the placement of their Venus and Mars, and also the rising sign and the 7th house have a lot to do with it.

I'm really glad I asked this question now. Between the two of you, this has been really enlightening.
