People often pick heroes or heroines to emulate in there life, from sporting stars, to there mom or dad. But is any man as great as Nelson Mandela. A man imprisoned for 25 years, made to do hard labour and I am sure many other things the normal populace would shudder to think of.
But considering this, he still managed to forgive his oppressors and begin the path to reconcilation in South Africa. I have travelled to England, the land of multiculturalism, and the USA. Although SA has it fair share of racism, i believe South African society is leaps and bounds ahead of both these two 'developed' nations along the road to complete intergration of racial groupings.
This was started by Nelson Mandela, and i'm sure South Africa will feel his presence for many years to come and say: thank you.
Do you think any man or women could compare to this, if so why. The only person that really springs to mind is Gandi, but then he also passed through South African shores... Perhaps it is to do with the country and it's peole?

I can understand your admiration of the man. Today I was reading a story in the Chicken Soup series about him and how he was leaving prison, and he talked about how he thought that only a few people would be outside the prison to greet him and how bad he felt to not thank the jailers who were kind to him; Then I thought about how this man had stayed in jail as long as I was on the earth(I was 27 and just had my first baby then)and it floored me. I sit and think of it, but in my opinion, I feel he is great, and with that jail time, it's kind of hard to compare him with someone, but we must remember that each person deemed great comes with his or her own experience. Sadly, that was his, but thank God, he is free and to become the President of that country? Incredible. Gandhi is comparable because he was a man who helped to break an empire, but as it says in the Bible, they were at their place in time for "such a time as this".
