My cat's veterinarian was just in the newspaper the other night talking about the launch of a new campaign being started by her Veterinary Hospital in association with Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, NY. The campaign, called "Fluffy Quits", is designed to raise awareness in smokers about how dangerous the effects of second hand smoke are for our pets. We always hear about the effects on children, but we have to remember our pets, also. When I quit smoking, one of the things I noticed quickly was "Hey, my cat doesn't smell like smoke anymore". Think about how much poison a smoker's pet breathes in, and how it sticks to their fur. Another good reason to QUIT!
Smokers can call Roswell Park Cancer Institute at 1-800-QUIT NOW for assistance to quit smoking.

Well Bravo to your Vet for not only caring for the animals at the hospital but also showing others that we all need to think about the things we do at home that can affect their health!!! Our pets are like family members to us so this is something that is important to us!!! I will definitely be checking out those links!!!
Thanx so much for sharing this with us!!!!

When I just took my cat in for his checkup I was talking with the vet about this. She said that dogs and cats get different types of cancers from second hand smoke than humans do, but that it occurs over a shorter period of time exposed to the smoke because their body mass is so much lower. Cats are particularly prone to lymphomas caused by second hand smoke.

You have a good vet back there lauriefnp! That was a good move that he did and lots of pet owner can gain from it.
Quitting smoking are one of the factore that some individuals are facing. Lucky for us in the family that we really didn't smoke even my husband didn't smoke.
Second hand smoke are dangerous and that was additional information that our pet was also harm from it.
Nice discussion laurie. I learn something from it.

Maribel, you are smart that you never started to smoke, and lucky to have found a husband that doesn't smoke either. I smoked for a lot of years, but I quit years ago. It is a very difficult thing to do, but once one is ready to give it up it becomes easier. I feel so much better since I've quit, and my house and cat smell so clean and fresh.

Wow! I applaud your local vet for doing this! You're right, we don't think enough about how much second hand smoke our pets are getting. I hadn't even considered it, to be honest, and I would consider myself an animal lover. I care a lot about animal's rights and don't understand people who treat animals and pets like they are 'things' and not living, breathing, reasoning beings. Anyway, I hope that your vet's campaign helps to raise a lot of awareness, not only just in your area, but all over. I appreciate you posting the link! ^_^

How right you are! Animals and pets ARE living, breathing, thinking, and reasoning beings. Sometimes they are more reasonable than a lot of people that I know. This campaign will probably start shooting up all over the country soon. Before we know it, they will make it illegal to smoke in the house with a pet!
