I'm having small sharp pains in my left chest area. They go away, but are disturbing me. I don't want to go to the doctor if it's nothing, so how can I tell?

I think you should see a doctor. According to my sister (a doctor) chest pains may be nothing or it may be a mild heart attack. You may not know it but you might be having a heart attack already. The first rememdy for it is to cough as hard as you can to stimulate the heart to pump more blood (to remove the blockage perhaps).
If you are a male i suggest you really see a doctor because being born a male is already 50% susceptible to heart attacks.

Its almost impossible to tell for sure. I would suggest that you call a doctor. Are you having any other sypmtoms? Any trouble breathing? Any nausea or sweating? Does the pain radiate anywhere.? Have you done any heavy lifting in which you may have pulled a muscle or something? How long has this been going on? How is your health otherwise? have you been sick lately? Any family history of any heart problems?

You have to go and see the doctor immediately. Truth is, the earlier you know what's wrong with you, the better you'd cope. Besides, medication time shall be less complicated, less expensive and more manageable if illness is detected at its earliest stage.

you should see a doctor if the problem persist for a day or two. It may be just gas pains or other form of pain associated with a bruising or if you over worked yourself. Do you work out? if you do then drinking protien will heal the muscle faster and let tissue rebild quicker.
