Faith - a personal manifestation ?

To my mind, faith in God is a free and intimate manifestation. The problem today is that people don't have arguments not to trust God. They don't want to believe because they are afraid of the changes they would need to make in their lives. We see more and more groups of people going together to church, helping one another - these are all good things - but do they really have a relationship with God? Or is it just the feeling that one did a good deed?
