Can someone tell me what Adsense is all about?

I have been hearing a lot about that lately, online, message boards, EVERYWHERE...Since I just got the internet a little over a month ago (after 3 years with NO internet), I have no clue...Can someone tell me what it is, what how it benefits someone who wants to make extra money, or post ads for a home business? Thanks!
