I have 4 cats and 1 dog. I usually know when they are hungry when I go near the area where I store their food they all gather around me the cats start meowing and the do does whisper like whine. I had a person close to me pass away a few weeks back every time I would sit down in the living room my dog would lay at my feet and my cats would either get on my lap or lay on the back or arms of the recliner. I am not sure if they felt sad themselves, but I believe fully that they understand what sadness is and can understand when their owners are feeling bad.

My pets are all part of the family :) They tend to all be rather spoiled though. It's very easy to tell when my pets are hungry, if the cat's dish is empty and she wants food she will curl around your legs repeatedly until you put something in her dish. When the dog is hungry, she will flip her bowl over repeatedly until you give her food. And when the guinea pig wants food he squawks and each time he does, it gets louder and louder until we feed him. Unfortunately I cannot tell when the frogs are hungry, but they don't eat much and they are usually overfed so that's not a problem either.
