Do you imagine

When I talk to someone on the phone or over the internet, I find myself making a visual image of what this person looks like. If I later meet this person face-to-face, I find the image I gave that person usually does not even look like the real person. Do we all tend to give someone a face in our minds when we talk to them by phone or internet?

I usually do imagine something to do with how the person looks, but it tends to be a little less concrete than what you're saying. For example, I had an online friend that I always imagined as being made of pure light, largely because of her extreme kindness towards me. Even after finally seeing her picture, I would have that image of her. When I was younger, I was often perceived online as being male. In the chat room where I met my husband (over 8 years ago now) I had a main username and then a couple of others I would switch to when I was in certain moods. One of those he found particularly annoying, and was pretty sure was male. It was only after we were living together that he saw me on that same chat room one day using this name that he realized it was me. So I guess a lot of the things you assume about people online can be pretty far off base. I do find that if people have usernames or avatars referencing specific celebrities or characters (mine is an anime character) it tends to color my opinion or image of them pretty heavily.

I find I am doing that more with the avatars since being here. I didn't seem to do it much before because I usually knew the person I was chatting with. That is so funny about your husband thinking you were a male with a particular name. I guess we tend to do this more than we think!! Thanks for responding.

I do the same thing all the time. When i speak to someone on the phone or if someone is telling me a story i always seem to have this image in my head of either what this person looks like or how their surroundings look. When someone is telling me a story i can visualize how the story played out. It's kinda interesting.

That is great!! I never seem to imagine their surroundings or try to play the story out. Will have to try that! Thanks for responding.

I think we all get a mental image of those we talk to on the phone if we are talking more than a couple of minutes. I have met people after talking to them for years on the phone without ever meeting and it is almost always a surprise. I can nail their personalities but I hardly ever get their description correct. One time I talked to a person that very quickly into the conversation explained that she was a woman but her voice sounded like a man and I don't mean a feminine man, she had a mans voice. Naturally images of a burly girl came to mind but eventually I met her and she was stunning. If I met her in a bar I would be tempted, if I was still single, to buy her a drink but wouldn't because I would be way out of her league, but man when she talks you look around to see who said it.

Yes I agree with you. I do often give a image to the person and it does happen that the person does not even match upto the image. This has happened many times.

I think this is very common, I do it as well. And I am always surprised when I meet the person and they looked nothing like what I expected. I expect a man with a deep voice to be big and a woman with a soft voice to be small. I think if we visualize them as a person, it makes them easier to chat with and relate to.

I think you are right about the reason we visualize them. It seems to make it more on a human level instead of an electronic one. Thanks for responding.

I think you create an image of what you would like them to be, based on voice and personality. Sadly often times it can be a let down to find out that that person is not what you imagined. As I tell everyone who talks to-and meets people-online. Be careful...I really don't think I need to state my reasons why.

So true. Our images seem to be off quite a bit most of the time whether it is phone or online. Thanks for responding.

I really should stop too since mine are rarely correct, but just seem to do it without even realizing I am. Thanks for responding.

Oh yes we do try to imagine what the person looks like by their voices but normally we are wrong when we meet in person, it is funny how we do do this and I do not know why we put these images in our minds, due to most of the time we are wrong.

I think that i can fairly say that i always paint a picture of the voice on the other end or the face on the other side of my computer connection. Chances are that the picture you painted is what you want that person to look like and you just assume the best. At least this is what i do ... LOL!!!

I do the same thing, and am usually wrong. Unless, however, I already know the person, then I get it right! I think we all do this and it's natural and sometimes fun, too!

I too find it fun, espeically if I get the opportunity to see if I am right or not by meeting the person or seeing a picture of them. Thanks for responding.

Yes, I imagine like you. It is the usual habit of people while taking on the phone or over the internet. It reminds us about the person.
