what are the proper ways of disciplining a toddler? my husband says to just talk to them but when i do that to my kid, he just laughs at me and thinks we're playing a game. my brother insists that i give him occasional spanking--when neccessary. that way the child will remember whats right and wrong. but im afraid that if i do that my child will hate me or become violent or a crybaby.

Time Outs are what works best for my 2 year old daughter, you don't have to sit him in a chair just send him to a quit place such as his room for a minute for each year of his age. Don't scream and yell when he does something wrong and don;t show any emotion. Just put him in timeout and calmly carrying him to his quiet place without saying anything. When his time is up tell him he can come out and nothing else. Most children act up because they want a reaction out of you. If you don;t give it to them then the behavior will usually stop.

Spanking never worked on my daughter. Sending her to her room works better.
