My husband and I have dreamed of visiting India for over 2 years. It seems overwhelming to pick out anf area to visit having never been there before. I was wanting to know if people who live in the country or who have visited in the past have any suggestions. We both abhore tourist trap areas, love the outdoors and would like to be submerged in teh culture.

If u are visiting india for the first time go to kerela and enjoy the greenary boatings/ living in boats the beaches, then visit temples in tamilnadu but u didnt want tourist spots then u have to have a good friend and stay with them as paying guests and they can instruct u , but be careful safety is very important be it locals /ousiders.starting from north that is mumbai pune surat are also good, though this is very little information given , u have to consult good travel agents and plan out with the help of locals too.

Go to Bangalore, New Delhi and Bombay. Then you can just ask people about the local parks and sites. Tourist traps can be avoided if you really talk to locals and not travel agents or tourism delegates. There was an Amzing Race Episode that had India in one of it's legs. They featured some nice locales... so I would try finding that episode... I think it was the 2nd season. Or if you have friends who came from India, it would be wise to ask them where to go.
