Get Medical Testing First

I can't believe that doctors are just handing out prescriptions like candy, without any medical test done first. There could be so many reasons a child or even an adult is hyper and can't concentrate. Food allergies is one of them. Getting an EEG and an MRI of the brain is another. Many things have to be ruled out first before drugs are prescribed.

I don't think doctors aren't handing out too many meds. When someone presents with a set of symptoms that do not indicate a life threatening illness, the doctor's job is to treat the symptoms first, to provide relief. It can take months to schedule EEG's and MRI's. While waiting for those tests, the patient's life can spiral right down the drain. The doctors are considering quality of life issues first, in these situations. Tests can be scheduled as needed but the symptoms have to be controlled in the mean time.

That is what I am talking about "Symptoms". Test have to be done to rule out many things. It does not take months to schedule an EEG or an MRI. I did it within a week. I have been this route for years with no improvement and was given many meds and the condition just got worse. So our quality of life got worse, so I had to find answers myself. I understand what you are saying and have been there for years. I am just trying to get the best care that I feel my son deserves and get answers. I know I am on the right path.

I hope since the new FDA warnings came out a few weeks ago that people will questions, and research carefully, before putting their children on meds. We used a non medication behavioral approach with our son about 6 years ago. Dr. David B. Stein's book Unraveling the ADD/ADHD Fiasco was very helpful. We used his program before I became his web manager, years before I ever met. Just wanted to disclose that upfront! Check out his website at http://www.drdavestein.com Julie

Before my son was put on medications, he was tested. Not by EEG or MRI, but through looking at behavior patterns at home, in school, and in other public places. I was relieved that I did not have to wait for a bunch of red tape before getting answers to my questions, and getting him some relief from his problems.
