The nightmare of effexor.

I've been on Effexor; 225 mg per day; since shortly after it's introduction to Canada several years ago... and it has worked very well for me. However recently I began to hear horror stories about known side effects which were never revealed to the consumer... and the inability seemingly, to go off this medication without suffering nightmarish effects. Can anyone enlighten me further?
