Are friends as important to you as your partner?

A couple of my mates recently had a big fall out, basically because one was planning on being with his girlfriend opposed to his friend. Anyway, my mate said to him that friends are more important than girlfriends. This sparked a discussion between a few of us today. Most of us, including me, believe that your partner is the most important thing. That seems obvious to me, but a few of my mates thought otherwise, saying that you may break up with your partner but your friends will be there through thick and thin. What do you think?
