I use to hate compliments. I used to believe that people should be at their best at all times. I used to believe that the world should not praise you (or me) for doing the things that are expected of you (or me) i.e. to be the best person that you can be. But then I realized that compliments (whether giving or receiving it) can be a real treat. Compliments make our hearts smile. Compliments inspire us to be at our best despite the world's complacency and apathy. So...what's the best compliment you've ever received...or given?

I really enjoy encouraging people, especially out of the blue. It can really cheer someone up. When I was shopping at Target once, I saw this older woman, and she just looked so fabulous! Her (gorgeous) silver-white hair was neatly pulled into a low ponytail, she had on nicely pressed dark jeans with a black turtleneck and a nice pair of black boots. Something prompted me to go tell her she looked great, so I tentatively walked up and said, "You know, I just have to tell you - you look so chic and fabulous!" The woman almost cried - turns out it was her 65th birthday and she was feeling 'old'! Her whole face lit up like a Christmas tree, and I could tell I'd made her day, saying such a simple thing.
It really is amazing how just complimenting someone can thrill them to pieces. Having gotten compliments out of nowhere like that myself, I can attest to the fact that it can make one's day...or even week!
