Usernames- one or many?

I've noticed that some of my online friends have seperate usernames for each forum/messenger/chatroom/game they use. It seems a little odd to me, because my online name is something very significant to me that I always use when I'm online. The only exception is World of Warcraft, where I have multiple characters and thus more names. My husband also creates new names often when he starts using a new website or forum, and then always has to figure out which name he used where.
Do you use the same name everywhere? Is it for the convenience of always being able to remember it? Is it because the name has meaning to you?
If you use multiple names, why? And how do you choose them?

Hi there lecanis. My apologies to you if I made a discussion almost similar to your discussion. I did not search if any discussion on the topic has been started. Obviously you thought of this topic ahead of me because you made the topic almost 6days ago. Am so sorry. am using a dial up connection so I immediately started the post today without first searching for any similar topic. am so sorry.

I use the same user name everywhere... when I came up with it I thought it was very creative and don't want to change. Now it is helpful because I am signed up on so many sites.. and if someone sees Empress4 elsewhere on the web 9.5 times out of 10 it is me.

I used the same username whenever i sign up in some websites. I think it was easier to remember if you using the same username in different sites. So, when my friend search my username in some website, it will be easier to find me because i have the same username. I think if i got many username, i will be hard for me to remember each username. My username has some meaning for me that i like this character with the same username in some movie.

Ohh blimey, if I had different names for all the sites I visit and use I wouldn't ever remember them .. I;ve had the same username sice 1997 .. so I wouldn't want to chage now .. in fact it's almost like it is my name ... I was in one of our large stores the other day and someone shouted out 'Pat where are you' and I swear without thinking I just yelled back .. 'I'm over here' .. well the chap was quite surprised to find me as he was looking for his wife hahahaha ...
I explained I wasn't even really a 'Pat' it was just a name I use on the Internet .. I blushed .. he gave me friendly hug .. and that's when his wife came around the corner of the aisle hahahah Luckily we were able to explain what had happened ...

I use the same name usually, but not 100% of the time. It's more like 92%.

I always use the same nickname everywhere. Been using it for 5-6 years. Before that it was bone 03. There is some website where that name is already taken so I have another to use in case.

Yes. Now there you are. The main thing is rememberence. How can people remember so many usernames. I am use to having only one username and that is inflamation as you can see it here at mylot too. Your this point is also acceptable that it seems that you have different characters while you have different user names and that is quite a strange feeling.

I try not to create sns that I won't be able to remember..but I've ended up creating quite a few anyway. Most of them meant something at the time to me.
Like they were nicknames someone called me in a different or sometimes not to different form..or they described the kind of page on the site I was getting -- like the account on xanga I share with a friend for our writing.

I use a few names online. At the minute, I tend to use my 'randomosity_prevails' ID, mainly because it's easy to remember. I have 2 more that I use on a regular basis, and it's usually when there's restriction on the number of characters you can have in a screen name, or if it doesn't allow an underscore. None of my names really mean anything, they're just phrases I liked at the time.
