We haven't taken the children camping yet but we always say we are going to every year . I think it would be important to make sure you had lots of blankets in case it got cold and lots of food . Also the fishing rods for the children so it would give them something to do so they wouldn't be bored .

My youngest girls, 5 and 8, love to fish. They like to see who can catch the biggest and the smallest! It's cute to watch. They also get a kick out of seeing if they can catch anything other than fish. They have caught sticks, etc. My 8 yr old was real tickled last summer when she caught a big shell. LOL!

With children, the first and foremost would be a first aid kit. an extensive one. After that, i would say tent, fire making stuffs, water, or at least water purification kits. marshmellow's. (remember children involved) and probably a good hunting knife. If you're not near a river where you can fish, then definitely food with at least a pan to cook it in. Flashlights. and my wife says toilet paper. LOL

One of my family reunions is a "camping" trip. We spend the weekend at my uncles place, but we all pitch tents, there's no TV, and it's pretty rustic "entertainment". I made sure I always had the fishing equipment with bait, poptarts for breakfast (no cooking required), and some games. Last year (the "kids" were 20+ years old) Monopoly was the big hit! We always had cards, Mad Libs, a nature hunt as a backup, but mostly I think they really enjoyed hearing us talk about "the old days" at the campfire. Oh, and we always had smores and hotdogs for the fire.
I think the best part was being so isolated that they "HAD" to spend time with us, but I think that deep down they really enjoyed the excuse... Be spontaneous, "FIND" things in nature, just BE with them, that's what they crave. This is a great opportunity, and my son that is local NEVER misses this now.
So, I guess, take YOUR FAMILY, that's what they really want - although they may not realize it!!!!

I used to do alot of backpacking b4 I got married so I've learned to 'live off the land' so to speak and pack light. I've taught my husband and daughter how to do it as well so we usually don't take alot of stuff with us. First aid kit is a definate #1 on the list. We use water purifiers and take a container to put the water in after it's purified and use that for cleaning up around camp. My daughter learned at a young age how to entertain herself around camp. We fish, hike, explore, and sometimes swim in the lake/creek, depending on where we are camping. We eat what we catch so meals aren't a problem. We pack a small wood-burning stove left over from my backpacking days or cook over the campfire. Again, depends on the weather. Our tent is lightweight yet sturdy with a vestibule where we can cook on the stove if raining. We use bio soap for washing and brushing our teeth. Use biodegradeable camp tp and a small backpacking lantern for light. All in all, if we must, we could pack our whole camp on our backs.
