Yes I think meditation can help you to handle stressful situations in a much calmer way, although I don't necessarily think it can help to reduce the amount of stress in your life as that is frequently caused by external influences. I try and meditate daily and I can confirm that it has certainly helped me to react to stressful situations differently.
My method of meditation is to sit on a chair with my feet flat on the ground, close my eyes and focus on breathing through my nose. If my mind starts to wander or I become distracted then I return my focus to my breath. I do this for about 15 minutes a day and it definately helps me to relax and feel much calmer.

Meditaion will be more powerful if u combine spirituality .Then it not only releivs stress but takes you on a different level. You enter the world of bliss, which has to be experienced. That is Dhyana. Dhyana is when you surrender yourself to the ultimate power and meditate.
