I never hit my dogs. There is no need to. I don't yell at them either. Raising your voice just doesn't work. It tends to make them nervous and then they really won't listen to you. I use a sound that I learned off a horse trainer and it works for me.

My dog used to act like he wanted a lover:D(if you understand what I`m talking about)and i had real trouble with him when someone came at my place and he used to do that thing. So,everytime he did this I told him it`s wrong what he does and I snap him under his bottom:)

If you hit them, they will become nervous. A dog is unlike a human that it can understand why it is being punished. You need to catch them in the act and redirect them (this works well with chewing). I have a dog that is very hyper. He likes to jump on people and things. In order to get his attention and to let him know what he is doing is the wrong thing to do, I have a trainer collar that I use in conjunction with key words like No, down, enough etc. I use the word, and if he continues with the bad behavior, he recieves a light shock from the collar ( I have put my own hand on the collar to feel the intensity of the shock so I know how it feels to him) If he continues after the first shock and word, I increase the intensity and repeat the word. Rarely do I have to go over the 1st setting which is more of an annoying tingle than a shock. It's done wonders with my really crazy really big dog. If you train your animal right, you should never have to yell.
