It will take you a little more time, but you will be much better off to just code your websites by hand. You will have more control over the final product, and you will understand more about the internet. Knowing HTML has helped me a lot through the years!

I agree with that. And I sugest that you find a good html editor (comes to my mind tswebditor, but I will check the name to be sure it is right). It is a great editor, has indentation, auto close tags, if you intend to code your site by hand, I would recommend a good editor (it is just a text editor prepared to be use for html/xhtml/php/etc. editing).

HTML, DHTML javascripts, XML, php, etc are programming language. Dreamweaver, frontpage, etc fall into software category. Dreamweaver is a very good software which is being used by many websites from personal to commercial ones. To create a professional websites, I would certainly recommend anyone to use Dreamweaver rather than frontpage. www.w3schools.com is the best website to guide anyone as someone has alread mentioned above.

It depends a lot on what kind of website you plain to develop. If your website has a lot of content, and you need a efficient way to manage content, I would recommend a CMS, like joomla, drupal, or others (you can find a lot of them on www.opensourcecms.com). They will provide you with a basic framework, and you will need to work only the template and content. If you need a suite which integrates flash, graphical editors and website editor, and can afford it, then for sure it is macromedia, but it is expensive. If you need a simple website, I can recommend easysite, from www.tufat.com, very good, cheap ($5) and worth a look. The most important thing on websites is planing them before starting to develop them.

I have used Frontpage, but I prefer Dreamweaver. I have Macromedia Studio incorporating Dreamweaver, Flash, Fireworks and Freehand. It's expensive, but you might be able to pick up a previous version a lot cheaper. I have a freind who is a professional website builder and he writes all of his work in code, using no front-end software at all. You are always limited when you use a program, so if you want to really get to grips with website building you should get into raw HTML and javascript.
